I WISH this is what it looked like this year! But no, everything is still snowless. Global warming?! (This picture is from 2010.)

Math Is SO Confusing!

Q: If a triangle has 2 right angles, then it isn't a triangle. For some mysterious reason, it's impossible. The triangle I'm dealing with looks like a triangle, but it's not now because it has 2 right angles! So what shape is it now?
A: ??????

I don't know the answer! A lot of you wise bloggers probably know, but I don't! It just goes to show you that math is SO CONFUSING!

  1. If it has 2 right angles, then you need more than 3 lines to make the shape. Otherwise it would look like this |_| (sides and bottom connected but no top line). Does that make sense?

  2. Here's another way to think of it -- the three inside angles of a triangle always (ALWAYS) have to add up to 180 degrees. If two of a triangle's angles are right angles, which are each 90 degrees, then that's 180 right there, which leaves nothing for the third angle!

  3. sounds like a pentagon

  4. CJ, it's Mom's fault. You had the right answer with isosceles. The problem was when we went beyond the answer to talk about the line of symmetry, which created 2 triangles out of your original triangle. And both of those triangles did have right angles.

So, the important thing is that you had the right answer and it was an isosceles triangle (with 3 acute angles).

The other important thing is to tell Mom to stop talking after you already have the answer. (Nicely, though!)

  5. huh? I think CJ is right. Math is SO confusing!

  6. I think CJ and Kelly are both right!

Of course Aunt Kathie, Dad and Mom are right too.
